WHAT ARE THE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS AND BENEFITS OF AUTOMATED VEHICLES?

It is believed that the safety benefits will far outweigh the risks as vehicle technology continues to develop.  Many organizations from governments to manufacturers to researchers are working carefully and diligently to ensure the safety of automated vehicles. Every city or state that has approved local testing has adopted guidelines and laws in order to operate in their areas. Requirements vary but some examples include:

  • A licensed driver must always be in the vehicle.
  • The technology must be certified by engineers.
  • A $5 million insurance policy must be in place.
  • Performance results must be reported to the state or city where the vehicle is operating.

Since the vast majority of car crashes are the result of human error, experts hope that a computer-controlled car will commit far fewer driving errors. Remember, automated vehicles are not prone to drowsiness, frustration, distraction or intoxication. They have the potential to prevent many crashes and save thousands of lives.
